Runes of Power
Ancient geometric glyphs that bind the earth's magic to Dwarfen will and stone.
The Runes of Power are ancient, magical inscriptions etched into stone or metal that form the bedrock of Dwarfen civilization and magic. Unlike the chaotic sorcery of human wizards, these runes represent a disciplined, structured channeling of energy, allowing the Stoneborn to manipulate matter, enhance their physical prowess, and protect their strongholds. They are not merely symbols but active conduits for the Will of Grungni, the Dwarfen creator god, binding the very essence of the earth to the user's intent.

Lore & Background
The knowledge of these runes is guarded fiercely by the Runesmiths, an elite caste dedicated to mastering their creation. Over the millennia, as the Dwarfs retreated into their holds and suffered great losses during the War Against Chaos, many secrets were lost or forgotten. Today, only a handful of true Runes exist, each one a treasure beyond price. To possess a Rune is to hold a fragment of the creator's power, capable of turning a humble axe into a world-shattering weapon or making a fortress impervious to siege engines.
In Their Own Story
The air in the deep caverns of Karaz-a-Karak was thick with the scent of ozone and hot stone. Thorgar the Stone-Speaker held the chisel steady, his eyes closed as he visualized the flow of energy beneath the mountain's crust. With a sharp tap, the final line of the Runes of Protection was etched into the obsidian gate. The air shimmered violently, then settled into a hum that vibrated in Thorgar's bones. He stepped back, watching as the stone seemed to harden further, becoming an unbreakable shield against the dark forces gathering outside. 'Grungni watches,' he whispered, the rune glowing with a faint, steady blue light.
Reader's Guide
Runes of Power function by channeling raw magical energy through specific geometric patterns that resonate with the earth's natural ley lines. To activate them, a user must possess both the physical inscription and the mental discipline to command the flow; without this focus, the rune remains dormant or may backfire. In practice, these runes are carved into weapons to grant superhuman strength, speed, or elemental effects like fire or lightning. When etched onto armor, they provide near-invincible defense against physical blows and magical attacks. Some Runes are even inscribed directly onto a Dwarf's body, permanently enhancing their vitality and resilience. Only the most skilled Dwarfs, known as Runesmiths, can create these artifacts, often spending years or decades perfecting a single inscription. While any Dwarf might wear a rune-enhanced item, only those with deep training can wield them to their full potential without risking magical burnout.
Did You Know?
- The creation of a Rune is so dangerous that many Runesmiths lose their lives during the process if they make even a microscopic error in the carving.
- Runes are often passed down through Dwarfen clans as heirlooms, sometimes becoming more valuable than entire kingdoms.
- Unlike human magic which draws from the Winds of Magic, Runes tap directly into the earth and the will of Grungni.
- The loss of knowledge regarding how to create new Runes is a significant source of despair for modern Dwarfs.
